Sick For Profit

CIGNA’s Edward Hanway spends his holidays in a $13 million beach house in New Jersey. Meanwhile, regular Americans are routinely denied coverage for the care they need when they need it most.

Welcome to the American health insurance industry. Instead of helping policyholders attain the health security they need for their families, big insurance companies get rich by denying coverage to patients. Now they’re sending lobbyists to Washington, DC to twist the arms of lawmakers to oppose reform of t… Continue

Yin and Yang

That's how my surreal, disjointed life has been--life with bipolar disorder since childhood and now arthritis and fibromyalgia.

I'll begin at the beginning. It's interesting how oce you've been diagnosed with something, you look back at your life and see certain things in a different light. I was born in 1957, and back in the 60's when I was a kid, nobody knew there was such a thing as bipolar in children. And in adults it was called manic-depression--the term "bipolar disorder" didn't come int… Continue

Girls. girls. girls....

nternational Women's Day was recognized by the Obama administration in the most significant of ways: the creation of a council to "provide a coordinated federal response to the challenges confronted by women and girls and to ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families."

"The purpose of this Council is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy," said President Obama. "My Adm… Continue

Unemployment and Depression

Whatever the reason for becoming unemployed, leaving your job can be stressful. Recent studies indicate a high percentage of individuals will develop a depressive illness within six months of becoming unemployed. In fact, after relationship difficulties, unemployment is the most likely thing to push someone into a bad depression. This isn’t surprising, since work is often a significant source of an individual’s sense of worth and self-esteem. When you lose your job you risk going from a position… Continue

Welcome!

I created this site after reading a heartbreaking post on DailyKos. My idea is to create a gathering place to share job opportunities, services, resources, network, find and give support. My hope is that we will build real community here. Create a blog, add discussions, start a group, add pictures of your kids and pets, make this your place.

The site will work only if everyone contributes and if we all help spread the word. Obviously, we don't market or advertise this site other than occasional… Continue

When bad can be good

Some might have noticed that I've seemed scarce lately. I haven't been well and have been struggling to manage the minimum in my daily life. I live with Chronic Neuro-Pschiactric Lyme, for those that don't know, and due to very late detection, I've got a tenacious case. After doing somewhat better with a new treatment plan that began last summer, I started to plummet in the late fall and got increasingly worse over the holiday season. In a weird way, this might have been a good thing.

You see,… Continue

Resisting Re-Entry

Was there a national 'zone out' zeitgeist over this holiday season? It seemed like everyone really checked out big time. Here in Boston, the public schools had an extended break due to snow and ice way back in mid-December. So, the kids were all home for 17 days. That's enough time to completely pull you out of your regular routines. No one seemed to resist the pull. My neighbor around the corner and I were making calls to each other over the course of those days saying, "OK, one of us has to ge… Continue

What can we do about healthcare?

I have no answers to that question, but I would love this community to begin thinking about this. I KNOW we could come up with creative ways to help people with healthcare needs. There is a front page diary on DKos about his today.

I have confidence that Obama will do something about healthcare, but I know it will take time and not solve the immediate crisis many people are experiencing now.

The stories and the sufferi… Continue

By: Jody Miller Seasonal Affective disorder or “Winter Blues” is a form of depression that occurs in relation to the seasons, most commonly beginning in winter. Falling in Love

By: Lynn A. Vice, Psy.D “Life is so short, so fast the lone hours fly, We ought to be together, you and I.” – Henry Alford With Valentine’s Day approaching, our thoughts naturally turn to romance and love. Cupid’s arrows are about to fly and most everyone secretly hopes that an arrow will strike them. We are [...]

A Simple Exercise to Increase Trust in Yourself

By: Dr. Susanne Babbel “We’re never so vulnerable than when we trust someone—but paradoxically, if we cannot trust, neither can we find love or joy.” — Walter Anderson Merriam Webster dictionary defines trust as the “assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something” and “one in which confidence is placed.” But unfortunately, trust [...]

Infertility

By: Rachel Thomas, MA, LMFT It’s no secret that men and women cope with stress differently. So when infertility creeps in on a relationship, this is often one of the first true crises that the couple encounters. The Emotional Journey of Cancer and How to Develop a Cancer Survival Kit

By: Amie J Harris, MSW, LCSW, CT The Emotional Journey of Cancer For a patient and their family the experience of dealing with cancer is like riding a roller-coaster. First, the difference between the two is that riding a roller-coaster is a choice; and secondly the expectations of the ride are predictable. The psychological effects of cancer [...]

MIDDLE AGED BABY BOOMERS AND ADDICTION

A woman enters my office disheveled, thin, mid forties, with hollow eyes.  It is as if the sparkle in her eyes ceased to exist a very long time ago.  She tells me she has been drinking and is using methamphetamines.  I am not surprised to hear this because lately my practice has been filled with [...]

Recognizing Child Sexual Predators, Protecting Your Children

Child sexual abuse is a significant problem in our society. Many studies have estimated that an alarming 12 to 25% of girls and 8 to 10% of boys experience some form of sexual abuse prior to the age of 18 years. Other studies have suggested that these figures may even be an underestimate and that [...]

NICE Men vs. DRACULAS – Women want DRACULAS, not just NICE men!

I really enjoy working with couples. It’s fulfilling and challenging to help couples make needed changes that bring more connection in their lives. Much of the challenge, however, is that the dynamics within a relationship change as often as sand shifts and takes on new shapes. One of those new shapes is what I hear a [...]

Helping a Loved One Suffering from Depression

Yesterday I saw a woman who was referred to me by her doctor because although her medical tests had come back negative, she was clearly suffering from some kind of physical illness, an illness her doctor had diagnosed as depression. She couldn’t sleep. She couldn’t eat. Her arms and legs ached. Her throat was tight. [...]
